What You Have Always Wanted To Know About The Benefits Of Laughing

Q: Why was six afraid of seven?  A: Because seven eight nine!  A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ”Ugh, that’s the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!” The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: ”The driver just insulted me!” The man says: ”You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I’ll hold your monkey for you.” Did you laugh at these jokes? If you did, you just became healthier.

On a more serious note… (probably not be the best phrase to begin with in this case), if you want to remain healthy and avoid different types of infections in your body, visiting your doctor is not always the best answer. The best medicine may be laughter.

Recent scientific research shows that people who laugh often are healthier than those who remain sorrowful and gloomy most of the time. Laughter has unique biological ways of causing ‘happiness chemicals’ to develop in your body. Why are happiness chemicals happy, you may ask? The reason is simple. They are looking forward to being metabolized and converted to energy. This is like having an orgasm in humans. (If you believe this, I have a good deal on selling you the Brooklyn Bridge). C’mon, laugh, I’m just joking.

Actually, the ‘happiness chemicals’ are called endorphins.   Laughter triggers the release of  these natural feelgood chemicals. Endorphins give you an overall sense of well-being and even have the ability to temporarily take away some pain.

Laughter also helps you lose a limited amount of body weight. I know you probably find this hard to believe. But it’s true. When you laugh, you trigger hearty chuckles that increase the heart rate, which in turn speed up metabolic processes and burn additional calories.

Research has proven that 10-15 minutes (not necessarily all at one time) of laughter burned about 50 calories. This doesn’t mean that you should cancel that gym membership, and just depend on laughing in order to lose weight. You still have to work out. But every little bit will help.  So, go on and laugh your way to a better looking body.

benefits of laughing stress

People who laugh frequently are more relaxed and less stressful than individuals who don’t laugh a lot. You see, when you laugh, you remove more air (primarily carbon dioxide) from your lungs compared to the air you breathe in. It is well known that excessive carbon dioxide in the blood can cause anxiety and stress. So taking those deep breaths when laughing removes additional carbon dioxide, producing that sense of relaxation and calm.

Additionally, laughter protects the heart from various cardiovascular diseases. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack, high blood pressure, and so on. Deep laughter influences deep breathing that enhances circulation of oxygen-rich blood into the body systems as well as nutrients.

Laughing boosts the immune system as well. Laughter prevents the accumulation of stress hormones and produce more immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies which improves  your resistance to disease. So, people who laugh a lot are less likely to get sick.

Laughter is also beneficial in maintaining social relationships. If you can make people laugh, you will most likely have more friends than individuals who are dull and uninteresting. Laughing makes people feel more relaxed and likely to engage in the conversation when they are around you.

There are few better ways to deal with depression and stress than having deep laughter. Laughing helps to reduce the sadness, irritation, anxiety and tension associated with depression. Even during the most difficult of circumstances in your life, a good laugh–or even just a smile–can brighten your day and make you feel better.  And when you feel better, those around you will also, because laughing is contagious just like some diseases.

As laughter, humor, and play become an integrated part of your life, your creativity will flourish and new discoveries for playing with friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and loved ones will occur to you daily. Humor takes you to a higher place where you can view the world from a more relaxed, positive, creative, joyful, and balanced perspective.

The best thing about laughter is that it’s free.  Laughter is a medicine in which you don’t need a prescription to get it filled.
