The Best Diet Could Be No Diet

During my senior citizen existence, I began to gain a few pounds around my midsection. I thought nothing of it at first. I thought” “I’ll just up my exercise game. I’ll be fine.” I was wrong. I jogged, walked, biked, played tennis, but the pounds didn’t decrease. It got worse. A lot worse.

There use to be a time when – if I slacked up on exercise, and gained a few extra pounds – it wouldn’t take long to get rid of those pounds …but not any more. I found out that the body goes through certain changes as you get older, and there’s not much you can do to impede those changes.

I gained so much weight that I could no longer wear my favorite church clothes – like my pin striped black suit, and more. I hated it. I really loved that suit. I was upset, very upset. I said to myself: “I have got to do something. I can’t let this happen.”

I made a decision. I have got to go on a diet, a strict diet. After doing research on different types of diets, I settled on a certain really popular commercial nutritional program. I received 2 or 3 big boxes of food from the company. They contained a variety of freezed dried products – like mac and cheese with beef, pasta fagioli soup, beans and ham soup – and other food items.

I could store some on the shelves. Other items had to be refrigerated. I wondered to myself: “What have I gotten into?” I was confused about what combinations of foods were best. It was a lot of food, and the next auto shipment would be coming in 3 months.

I’ll make the story short. Some of the food was good, but most of it was tasteless, and bland. That diet ended almost as quick as it started. Matter of fact, I still have some of the products stored in my cabinet, and it has been there for years – only kept for emergencies or disasters. You never know.

After that diet, I tried several more – Mediterranian, vegan, all-protein, DASH, TLA, etc. You guessed it. None of them worked. Why not? Probably because I didn’t stick with any of them. I just couldn’t make it without that good old home cooking. You know what I mean.

While there’s no such thing as the perfect diet, there are probably some that are better than others. However, none of them are worth a dime and a quarter if you don’t follow and stick with them.

Anyway, after talking with family and friends, and doing my due diligent research, I decided that the best diet is no diet. Just eat the healthy foods you like and reduce (eliminate if you can) certain foods which are known to cause health problems. Everyone should know what these bad foods are – saturated fats, red meat, sugary foods, fried foods, and so on.

And that’s what I did, along with continuing to exercise. I basically ate what I wanted to eat. I just cut back on how much, and cut out the bad foods.

And I ate healthy snacks – nuts, fruits, yoga – throughout the day. Eating snacks keeps your metabolism up along with not letting you get too hungry, which can lead to overeating during your next meal.

I finally discovered that the best no nonsense diet was simply no diet at all. I enjoyed eating again, and that was one of the most important things.

no diet stick with

There is nothing wrong with dieting, if you choose to do so. But you’d better stick with them, if you want them to work. By the way, studies have found that most people who lose weight after dieting gain the weight back after 2 or 3 weeks. So, why not just make a lifestyle change by eating healthy and exercising more frequently. It will be a lot less stress and trouble.

It took a while, but I dropped from 270 lbs to about 245 lbs now. I’m still not where I want to be, but I know I will soon get there. I will send a before and after picture later.
