Are you in a bad mood often? The problem could be in what you’re eating. Research have found a relationship between the food you eat and your emotions. For examples the studies found that the effects on the body for complex carbohydrates are different from foods like sugary cakes, white bread, and saturated fats.

It shouldn’t surprise you then that certain types of diets can alter your mood. For example, the Mediterranean diet can lessen depression. This diet includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and fish. Dairy products, and red meat are not part of the Mediterranean diet.

Which Foods have The Most Effects on Improving Mood

Studies have found that complex carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids and lean protein are some of the most effective foods for improving mood.

Complex (The Good) Carbohydrates

The good carbohydrates are composed of non-processed carbs are foods that have an entire supply of carbohydrates including natural sugars –  as well as much more fiber. The bad carbohydrates consist of processed carbs like sugars, enriched flour and white bread and much less fiber. These foods usually have less vital nutrients in them as well due to being processed.

The most common good carbs come from whole grains, beans, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Eating more of these foods will not only improve your mood, but will also reduce your chances of acquiring a number of health problems, such as diabetes, heart problems, and high blood pressure.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Cell membranes are made up partly of omega-3s. Scientists believe that increasing the omega-3 levels makes it easier for serotonin — a chemical that carries messages from one brain cell to another — to pass through cell membranes. Serotonin is a brain chemical that affects mood – sometimes called the ‘feel good’ chemical in the body.

Fatty fish like salmon is a good source of omega-3s. Packaged fish oil supplements are the easiest and most convenient way to increase omega-3 levels.

Flaxseed oil is also a good source of omega-3s. It can be taken as a supplement or used in salad dressings. Unlike fish oils, which contain a different combination of omega-3s, flaxseed oil should not be cooked because heat can damage the omega-3s.

Lean Protein

Protein foods contain a substance called tryptophan, which can be a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter connected with desire and disposition. Normally, adequate protein contained in legumes, meat and lean poultry and oily fish is proven to improve mood.

Serotonin relays messages in the nervous system that are associated with mood, hunger, sexual desire, memory, learning and more. Matter of fact, some antidepressants work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin so that more is left in the body to keep working.

The B vitamins, vitamin D, and green tea are additional foods which have been demonstrated to lift mood and decrease the potential for developing depression.
